Citrus County has experienced a 21-percent growth rate from 2000 to 2009. While Citrus County has, like every other community, been impacted by the economic downturn, new projects are still moving forward. Planned projects by Progress Energy and other users in the immediate area will bring thousands of jobs and new homebuyers to Crystal River and surrounding areas.
According to Enterprise Florida, the Citrus County population has tripled since 1980. Population and businesses are expected to continue to grow well into the future.
The existing population, tourist attractions, transportation choices, and continued growth provide a ready-to-buy consumer base.
The City of Crystal River itself has a stable population of 3,547. A Crystal River Community Redevelopment Agency was established in 1988 to spearhead the revitalization of the City. There is a new vision for the community tied to its strength as the “Gem of the Nature Coast.”
Since then, commercial development has created jobs for the area. Progress Energy continues to expand its presence and is in the midst of several hundred million dollars in upgrades to its existing plant. Permitting and licensing is proceeding for construction of the new plant, which will pump an estimated $5 billion into the local economy in the short term.
Crystal River has a positive population and future job growth rate. Annual average income is $64,540 and an average age of 46 years old.
With enjoyable, year-round weather, there are plenty of events and festivals that bring out the community and attract guests and tourists.
